We are loving ATKV Resorts!

When planning a family, many of us have these idealistic visions of family holidays. Before having children, we really don’t have any idea how stressful a holiday with little children can be. Finding somewhere to stay that is genuinely “child-friendly”, while still offering some form of relaxation for parents, and meeting the high standards of protective grandparents, is no joke. Our editor recently took her whole family, 6 adults and 2 preschoolers to ATKV Goudini Spa. And it is official – we are LOVING the ATKV resorts!  ATKV Resorts insert

There are 7 ATKV resorts across South Africa. All of them are strongly family-focused, offering a variety of accomodation options and activities. Whether you are a camping family, wanting to teach your kids to pitch a tent… Or you are a glamping family that wants a hot shower, luxury bedding and cleaning services… ATKV Resorts has something for everyone.

The ATKV resorts are located in some of the most beautiful locations around South Africa. From natural hot springs to golden sands and crashing waves to the banks of a river in the bushveld, natural beauty is merged with every convenience. At an ATKV resort, you know you won’t want for anything.

The ATKV Goudini Spa resort is hidden in the mountains, just outside of Cape Town. We are definitely not a camping family, but we have a deep appreciation for nature. I was a little bit nervous to be going away with two other families… Even if those families are part of mine. One house, three couples and two kids, sounds like the makings of a really bad reality show!

I was, however, hoping for that family holiday we all dream of before actually having our own families… Having been on the receiving end of the realities contrasting pre-children fantasies before, I was jittery. I needn’t have been though. The minute you pass through the Huguenot Tunnel (huge excitement for my 3 year old), it is like leaving the “real world” behind.

Making our way up and through the resort, we could see all the different accomodation options on offer. From the campsite to the apartments to the rondawels, everything was pristine and so green! We had opted for the luxury Slanghoek Villas, sitting right above the resort. The views from the balconies are utterly breathtaking.

Three of the ATKV Resorts now offer these luxury villa options, Goudini happens to be one of them! The villa has 3 large bedrooms, each with their own veranda. There are 2 bathrooms, and an open-plan lounge, kitchen and dining room. There is a fireplace in the lounge and an aircon in the living area. My two highlights? Huge windows and glass doors, bringing the gorgeous mountains into the space. And undoubtedly, the balcony. A nice big space, a big braai area, a big wooden table and views in all directions.

Goudini Spa is famous for their pools. Indoor, outdoor, cool, warm and mineral. There are deep pools, shallow pools, overflow pools. There are also private jacuzzi rooms, where you can hide away take a break from your little ones. (If you’ve brought along grandparents or special aunts and uncles to tag in for a while). You may be one of those people who never wears a costume… You will want to change that once you are there.

Luckily, they have one of the most well-equipped shops I’ve ever seen. You can buy a gorgeous high quality swimsuit in any size, a brightly coloured towel, sunhats, sunscreen, sunglasses and pool noodles. If you aren’t swayed, the shop is well stocked with magazines, books, puzzles and a variety of colouring books (for children and adults), crayons and pencil crayons.

Six of the seven ATKV resorts have a lovely casual, family (and wallet) friendly restaurant called Koswerf. We sent the boys down to get takeout from there the second evening and enjoyed freshly made pizza, burgers, and fish and chips for the littles as the sun set.

There are so many different activities available to children (and grown up children) of all ages at ATKV Goudini Spa.

  • Outdoor and indoor swimming pools
  • Mineral bath and jacuzzi
  • Water slide and trampolines
  • Miniature golf
  • Hiking trails
  • Birding
  • Horseback riding
  • Tennis and volleyball
  • Snooker and pool
  • Games arcade

From the website, I can see there are as many activities at all the locations. You could easily stay for a week and never run out of things to do.

One of the things I love most about the whole idea of the ATKV Resorts is the design of everything about them to be genuinely family focused. Everybody from a baby to a toddler, preschooler, tween, teen, or adult, will have an amazing holiday at one of these resorts. There is genuinely, something for everyone. If you are looking for a spot for a family vacation in South Africa, I would highly recommend you give one of the ATKV Resorts a try.

The Good

The perfect family vacation at a built-for-purpose resort. With something for everyone, I highly recommend visiting ATKV Goudini Spa.

The Bad

Some of the people who stayed with us had inconsiderate neighbours alongside their rooms.
