Mysmartkid is a play based initiative for children from birth to 6 years old has taken the local market by storm and revolutionized the way in which Early Childhood Development is promoted in South Africa. Mysmartkid has quickly become a leader in this field through its “learn through play” philosophy.
The subscription programme promotes school readiness through the use of age-appropriate toys, tools and activities and was designed with the help of a panel of experts who share their professional insights and expertise.
In the words of Adrian Kaplan, Mysmartkid’s General Manager, “Like it is for any excited parent, the first birthday is always a particularly special one. The growth over the past year has amazed us all and we are honoured to call our 10 000 loyal members our ‘family’. We see each month as an opportunity to surprise and delight parents and caregivers and their precious little ones with various educational toys and tips on how they can play and learn together.”
After experiencing phenomenal growth in their first year, Mysmartkid is proving to be a popular solution for busy parents who want to give their kids the best start in life. An appealing aspect of the programme is the Smartboxes, which are designed to cover the six Early Childhood Development Areas outlined by the Department of Education: Wellbeing, Identity, Concepts, Communication, Creativity and My World. Each Smartbox focuses on a particular developmental area and contains age-appropriate toys with instructions and suggestions for activities and games that target various skills, endorsed by professionals to help children reach their ECD milestones.
“We’ve been flooded with testimonials from parents and caregivers”, says Kaplan. Among them is Leanne McDougall, mother to an 8 week old girl, “I never thought she would have a favourite toy at her age – but when I bring out her best ‘friend’ Max (from Mysmartkid’s Communication 0-1 year Smartbox), she cries out and is all big smiles! I’m sure she is going to enjoy it even more when she starts teething.”
Another heartwarming response comes from Kobie Kotze, grandmother to Emma. Commenting on the programme, she says, “Emma absolutely loves books and only wants her Mysmartkid book with her in the bath. As I am the grandmother and it is a long time since bringing up my own little ones, the programme rekindles all those memories and knowledge. We thoroughly look forward to the arrival of each Smartbox!”
Mysmartkid chose to share their recent birthday celebrations with 34 children from Cape Town Child Welfare. After an afternoon spent with tried and tested party favourites – a magician and a colourful cake – each child received their own ‘birthday present’ which included a playful owl backpack filled with toys and goodies.
Kaplan concludes, “We are excited to celebrate as we look back at our growth over the past 12 months. And we can’t wait to see which milestones we’ll reach together with our members in the next year!”
