February is the hottest month of the year in South Africa. While we are generally pretty good with slathering our children in suscreen, us moms often forget to think of ourselves. Sun protection doesn’t need to be complicated. By following some of these tips, you will be well covered for the hottest months of the year.
New Year, new sun protection
I am pretty sure that we’re all guilty of having last year’s sunscreen stored at the back of our bathroom cabinet. Using an expired sunscreen is as effective as going out without anything at all. The formula loses its potency and will no longer provide protective coverage.
Take care with spray lotions
Yes, spray lotions are more convenient and seem easier to apply… But be sure that you spray them EVERYWHERE! It’s common to miss places and leave uncovered spots with spray lotions. Also, ensure that you let the lotion absorb and dry properly before making a splash in the pool!
Start your day with sun protection
Apply sunscreen before getting dressed to avoid missing any spots, especially around your sleeves and neck line. Also, remember that sunscreen takes a couple of minutes to activate, so applying it when you’re just about to leave the house, risks your exposure.
Water intake is just as important all year round, but during summer, drinking more water helps prevent dehydration and heat stroke.
Avoid direct sunlight
Limit your sun exposure between 10am and 4pm, as this is when the sun is at highest and strongest. Don’t forget to cover your neck, ears, face and nose with sunscreen! And if you do plan on going out, double up on the protection with a wide brim hat.
Most of all, have fun and enjoy the last few months of summer!
