Top baby shower gift ideas

Baby showers are a fun way for moms to build up the necessary goodies they need to prepare for baby’s arrival, but increasing “mompetition” can mean that these events are becoming pricey affairs – and often guests are at a loss of what to get the expecting hostess.

There are lots of creative gifts and ideas that can be picked up for a steal, says Claire Cobbledick of Gumtree South Africa. “Using local businesses and suppliers instead of boutique baby stores, you’d be amazed at how much you save,” she says.

Top picks for Baby Gifts include:

Handmade Goodies: Even if you can’t sew a straight line, there are lots of individuals crocheting booties to beat the band online. “Kim Kardashian apparently dresses her baby in head to toe vintage but the rest of us can still get the same look for less. And because the items are handmade they can be passed on generation to generation.”

Funky maternity shirts: Cobbledick says that guests shouldn’t forget about Mom. “It’s nice to put a smile on the expectant mother’s face with a nice outfit. I love these novelty T-shirts that guarantees to elicit a giggle or two.”

Cupcake toppers: Thrifty hostesses can bake their own cupcakes but give them a professional flair with custom cupcake toppers. “There are literally dozens of professional bakers that can transform your store-bought or homemade cakes into a Cake Boss creation.”

Belly casting: There are also numerous companies that will allow moms to keep a cast of their bump. “It can be decorated and kept for years, and it’s a great item to show your baby when they are old enough to start asking questions.”

Nappy cakes: Of course every mother will tell you that there is one item they can never get enough of…nappies. “Nappy cakes are a fun way of actually giving your expectant friend what they really need – some diapers, nappies and all the other paraphernalia!”

Most of these gifts can be found online or on classifieds and delivered on the day of the party. “It’s a great way to both save money and support local businesses,” says Cobbledick.
