This Mother’s Day, Tum 2 Tots has partnered with locally produced and bespoke jewellery company, Oh Voila, to offer one lucky reader the chance to win three adorable ribbon bracelets, worth over R500!
A must-have accessory for any child, the three bracelets each have a gorgeous charm – a heart, an adorable meerkat and a giraffe. This means that should you be the lucky winner, daughter, mother and grandmother could each wear one, forming a beautiful and meaningful gift.
The range includes jewellery for all ages and genders and uses leather, ribbon, shweshwe and many more materials for a unique twist. Customers can also feel good knowing that each and every product is honestly produced by previously underprivileged women in South Africa.
South Africa has one of the highest rates of unemployment in the world and a crippling oversupply of unskilled workers. Women play an essential role in South Africa with, on average, one woman providing for 7 people in her community.
Barbara Kasasa, owner and founder of Oh Voila, works directly with disadvantaged women. The skill set required in the craft industry are easily taught and transmitted. By acquiring their help to bring her designs to life, Barbara has simultaneously empowered these women to generate an income to help feed their families and gain greater independence.
Oh Voilà is more than just another jewellery brand. Instead they stand as a community mentor, encouraging the growth and empowerment of women through vital support, training and guidance.
“Our partners are not cheap labour, we treat the women we work with as independent sub-contractors,” says Barbara. “We teach them a useful skill, encourage them to open their own bank account and manage their own finances. And because we understand that transport and childcare costs are expensive, they can work from their own homes.”
“We take the time to explain how to generate invoices, how to comply with delivery terms and how to implement quality controls,” she says. “We also encourage these women to employ and train others, thus creating a chain of self-sufficient women who are able to supply us with beautiful products, on time and on demand.”
Oh Voila doesn’t enter into exclusivity agreements, as they promote the sharing of skills and expertise with other non-direct competing companies.
As well as keeping labour local, Oh Voila also see the benefit of sourcing materials that are, where possible, locally produced. Their goal is to help grow our manufacturing industries and help create and sustain jobs in an independent and elegant way.
Past clients have included the likes of Princess Charlene from Monaco, Francois Pienaar, Helen Zille (Premier of the Western Cape), Jo-Ann Strauss (former Miss South Africa), Michelle McLean (former Miss Universe), Dr Precious Moloi Motsepe to name but a few.
