Heartlands Baby Sanctuary’s 5th birthday

This May will see Heartlands Baby Sanctuary, situated at The Interchange in Somerset West, celebrating its 5th birthday.

“It has been a very interesting journey since inception. We started out with an empty shell of a building, and now, through the generosity of the community at large, we have a fantastic, child-centric facility. We are now able to proudly live our mission in that we provide a safe, loving and homely environment to young children in desperate need of care and protection, in order to create a foundation to develop a happy, healthy and confident child.” – Heartlands CEO, Monica Buitendag.

According to Buitendag, Heartlands has cared for over 262 children and babies, who have all needed a temporary, residential safe care facility. These children are placed out as soon as possible because, as their vision says, it’s every child’s birthright to belong. These are abandoned, abused, neglected, ill and special needs little souls aged between birth and 6 years who have required specialized care and support. At any given point, there are 25 children and babies in Heartland’s care.

Buitendag continues to add that Heartlands has many wonderful events and campaigns to
share with you as part of their 5th birthday celebrations.

Join the Heartlands birthday celebration!

Kicking off with love, is the French-inspired Valentine’s evening for only R250pp. This event will be hosted at the Coffee Shop and under the stars in the garden. The ticket price includes a welcome drink and snacks on arrival, champagne and a sumptuous picnic basket.

Following this, the official launch of the Exclusive Heartlands Club 5 Campaign will take place, then the Open Day on the 4th May, culminating in a Celebrity Golf Day on Friday 8th.

The Club 5 initiative encourages people to put a monthly debit order in place for R100 or more. Then at year-end one lucky winner will receive a R5 000 cash prize.

This is the `mini-me’ of the Adopt a Cot campaign, which itemises the monthly costs per cot. This portrays that even after the government’s contribution of 22% and Heartlands own sustainability projects at 24%, there is still a shortfall of over R7 000 per month per cot. This reaches into the millions each year. Not only corporates, but individuals, are encouraged to support this campaign on a monthly basis, even if it is less than the shortfall amount.

As Buitendag points out, the full value of every donation is 100% tax-deductible given the
Sanctuary’s Section 18A status.

But that is not all. The Golf Day’s key auction piece is accommodation for a two-week trip to Thailand!

Full Moon Fever

Coming up on the Friday 24th April, Heartlands will be hosting a fundraiser at the Tygerberg Barnyard Theatre. ‘Full Moon Fever” will be playing, with evergreens from the sixties and seventies such. Expect hits from The Eagles, Simon and Garfunkel, Jim Croce, Cat Stevens, Fleetwood Mac and Johnny Cash. Tickets are available at Heartlands at only R180pp or R680 for a table of 4. Please contact Tarryn on 021-852 3527 or via email for enquiries and bookings, and to discuss pre-orders on meals.

Highlight Event: Rubber Ducky Race

And more on the event side, says Buitendag “We have a very exciting, rather `quacky’ type of event planned for September. This is a wonderful fun day out for the family – proven to be an excellent fundraiser internationally. The idea is that we have an` Adopt a Ducky’ Race. Hundreds of little yellow bath duckies get to race each other to the finish line in order to claim their share of the cash nest.”

Blood Donation Drive

Through the Western Cape Blood Services, Heartlands also recently enjoyed a highly successful Blood Donation Drive. Please diarise the following dates for our next drives: 5th March, 4th June, 17th September and 3rd December.

Editor’s note: The great thing about donating blood at Heartlands is that you can enjoy a wonderful meal or snack in their Coffee Shop. You can also browse through the Chic Boutique and Book Shop whilst you are waiting your turn.

Keep an eye out on their Facebook page for details of a series of monthly games evenings.
