As far as children’s birthday parties go, parents seem to sit firmly in one of two camps those that love planning them and those that are filled with dread at the thought. If you are in the latter camp, then all you need are a few simple tricks and tips to host a seamless event that ensures happy kids and more importantly, stress-free, happy parents.
Local private events company, Event Affairs list their top tips for creating super-fun kids parties – for adults too!
• Decide on a Theme: Firstly decide on the theme, as this could determine the venue and the guest list. Historically, themed parties were usually split between boys (superhero’s and pirates) and girls (fairies and princesses) cutting down the number of guests considerably. Currently, there is a definite trend away from separating the two sexes, so now Art Jamming, Theatresports, cooking classes, neon dance parties, Survivor, safari, and petting zoo’s are extremely popular birthday party themes with both boys and girls.
• Keep your adults close: An adult usually accompanies kids up to the age of 6 or 7, and this is often where the hostess’ panic sets in – but keeping the adults entertained is easy to arrange. Create an adult space slightly away from the action but where they can still see what’s happening. Place plenty of seating near a table with help-yourself drinks like an assortment of wine and a tea and coffee station.
• Make it easy for yourself: Put out plates of sweet and savoury snacks like scones, quiches and crudités – make sure that they are pre-prepared so they either go straight onto the table or just need warming up in the oven for a few minutes before the guests arrive.
• Get a babysitter: Hire a couple of babysitters to help watch over the kids and manage activities and the chances are that parents will relax, and feel less inclined to hover around their little ones.
