Win a R500 Snookums Hamper!

Snookums started out in Cape Town more than 40 years ago and has grown to be one of the strongest proudly South African baby brands. Offering parents a wide variety of high quality products, Snookums baby accessories are now exported to countries as far as Sweden. This month Snookums is giving one Tums 2 Tots Online the chance to win a hamper valued at R500!

Snookums has just launched two brand new baby rattles, The Twisties rattle and the Crown teether rattle, into leading baby retailers throughout South Africa. Both have been specially designed with colour, shape, texture and sounds to stimulate baby, double up as teethers and and can be washed.

A rattle is a rattle is a rattle right? Not according to history… The origins of the rattle were lost in time, but it can definitely be regarded as the oldest toy in the world. A museum called the Bibliotheca Wittockiana has on display a collection of over 500 rattles collected by Idès Cammaert, a passionate collector and owner of the largest private collection of its kind.

Some say that the rattle was invented by Archytas of Tarentum (born around 440 BC). But is wasn’t merely something for a child to play with. The material that the rattle was made of often determined its role. Dried fruit, pomegranates, terracotta, gold, silver, mother of pearl, coral and crystal were all used in earlier years to produce rattles. The material used was sometimes an indication of the child’s family’s wealth and they were also used as lucky charms to protect babies against “sorcery” or disease.

Other sources will tell you that figures shaped like birds or dogs were made with small balls inside that would rattle. But as clay is not safe for babies, Paul Revere started making silver rattles that could be chewed. Tiffany’s, the famous New York jewelery company, soon jumped on the band wagon and made sterling silver rattles as baby gifts.

Fortunately rattles today are a much less complicated matter than in earlier years. Even so, the reasons for using them and the advantages for baby are probably still the same. Rattles are a source of stimulation for babies – they like the sounds and they try to follow the path of the rattle with their eyes. So while entertaining baby, it is also honing baby’s senses,  helping them to learn to explore and some, of course, also double up as teethers.
